"When are you chatting with the band?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a close gang. Their visuals frequently depict them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to form a group."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words follow breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will forever be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
