French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
