Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
